Notes for ALLEN HOWARD:

Believed to be a contemporary of  Peter Jefferson, Allen Howard received six grants of land on the James River. His will lists his plantations as Elk Island, Deep Creek, Rockfish River (Pond), South Shore and Sycamore Island. Howard was appointed a magistrate for the new county of  Albemarle  in 1745 and served through 1761. He also was named a major in the Albemarle County militia.  He was elected 1751-52-54 as a delegate of the House of Burgess from Albemarle County. His will was probated 21 July 1761 in Goochland County, Va. Witnesses were Archelus Jarratt and Robert Furlong. Benjamin Howard, his eldest son, inherited.  His will left to his son William land in Cumberland County on the south side of the James River below the mouth of Deep Creek. Allan Howard built his growing family a “great house” on the Rockfish River . A descendant built on or near the great house site and named  his house "West Cote”.  Mrs. Josephine Blair, a latter day owner of the house, renamed it “Summer Hill.” The house, known again as West Cote, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The register says it was built by William Allen Carter, a grandson or great grandson of Allen Howard. It is dated to 1830. Carter owned  West Cote about 10 years but facing financial troubles was forced to sell to a neighbor.
